First question: Is Runescape worth the subscription and is it fun to play if you don’t have one? These are very opinionated questions, but disregarding that, the bottom line runs as a yes for each. Runescape, however, is worth the subscription. The member world is huge, and not only do you gain more skills, but the free skills are also further expanded on. There are weapons and items beyond count added into the game. The additions will keep you addicted for hundreds of hours, and in the end, that is what matters, whether the game is fun to play.

Second question: what is the status of the player base and the developers? First off, Jagex is good at what they do, and there is no denying it. Runescape was the original idea from two brothers. This question is probably the most blurry in terms of a straight answer. All in all, most people would say yes, and so would I. If you have never played World of Warcraft, you wouldn’t know how absolutely humongous the game world is. It takes literal hours to travel across, not including the expansion packs. As an added bonus, monsters drop trash loots. This may not matter to some, but it adds realism. It’s nice to kill a wolf and have the option of it dropping either a fang, a claw, a pelt, ahead, meat, tail, or an ear. It’s things like that that make the world seem like a continually moving dimension. There are so many items in-game that counting them without a computer would be suicide. The amount of gameplay content, and the total addictiveness of the game, make the answer yes.

Second question, like above, involving the player base and developers. First off, Blizzard is probably the most talented game studio ever created, arguably, along with Bungie. (or whoever else you favor) Blizzard has made so many quality games in their day that they practically define the perfect game for quite a few genres. Did you know Blizzard has three employees dedicated to keeping the world lore straight for each of its game universes? Talk about dedication! As for the player base, no complaints here. Although you may come across the occasional snob, most players are very helpful and friendly, and the ticket system works and ensures a swift response from Blizzard. (Maybe not so swift, but more so than other games) The guild system works well and allows you to get to know a select few people. It’s like a family almost.

Final question: the niche. WoW fits a lot of niches of the RPG genre. Like Runescape, you can accomplish things with just five minutes, albeit not as much. World of Warcraft, really, however, is meant to be a commitment. You hear about people losing their lives to this game. That is entirely correct. Losing friends to WoW may make you hate the game, but you can’t deny that that is just a product of its quality. Leveling up in WoW and doing high-end dungeons and raids is when WoW really gets fun. Repetitive it may be, there is no denying the epicness of crashing through Naxxramas and owning the bosses. The same applies to quests, specifically the Wrathgate in WotLK. Without spoiling it, there is an amazing cutscene made from in-game graphics. The final verdict for WoW is simple. Despite your opinions, there is absolutely no denying that WoW is a genre-definer, the role model for MMORPGs. The massive world and beauty will stun you the whole way.

These are the true measures of a game, the real way it should be defined. Graphics may make a game nicer, but in the end, they don’t matter. It’s the quality of the gameplay and whether it is actually fun to play. At the end, which of these you like better is definitely about opinion, but save your breath and stop flaming them, because both have immense potential to become so much better than they are, and we can all agree that then we would truly have some great games on our hands.

RPG’s Became My Drug of Choice

I consider myself an intelligent, rational, well-rounded woman. I’ve always loved reading, writing, and sketching. Those were my tools to release my stress and anxiety. But back in 1990, I met a man who introduced a new interest in my life. He was a co-worker and a great friend. His name was Herb and he was the catalyst to my addiction. Role-playing games! Herb was an avid gamer. RPG’s were his preferred genre. He talked about his gaming with such passion and animation you would have thought that he was talking about actual people and places. At that time I was a divorced mother of three and playing video games was not an option. StarTropics was only the beginning. I later became a fan of the Zelda, Final Fantasy, and Sims series. My collection of RPG’s was a sight to behold and I rarely loaned them out. My discs had to be kept pristine and in mint condition. I even became a member of Herb’s gaming group. We discussed strategies, upcoming releases, graphics, systems, etc. My free time soon became dedicated to the gameplay. I would play for hours on end. No food or drink, just bathroom breaks.

At first, the impact on my life was subtle. My children who were still in elementary school actively participated in my gameplay. They coached me through dungeons, battles, and maps like old pros. But gradually, I stopped socializing. I wouldn’t go out, I stopped answering my phone, and I stopped writing when I was playing a game. My reading material soon included game magazines. On my morning commute to work I would find myself mentally working through a dungeon or puzzle I couldn’t get through the prior night. My gaming went from being restricted to weekends only to almost daily.

Then in the first week of January 1994, my brother who had been seriously ill for a very long time took a turn for the worst. He was my younger brother and I knew that his death was inevitable. So I went to see him in the hospital one last time. I wasn’t prepared for what I saw. The image of him emaciated and just barely holding on will haunt me for the rest of my life. To cope with the grief that I was already experiencing I started playing an RPG. I can’t recall the name of that particular game right now. But what I do remember is playing that game day and night for a week. Right up until Jan. 10, the day my brother died. I was so focused on that game I didn’t have time to think, feel, or cry. I was just numb and that’s just what I wanted at that time. It was when I stopped playing that I finally broke down.

I didn’t work for that week while playing that game. I couldn’t. And I no longer play as fervently as I once did. Like shoes, we outgrow certain things at different stages in our lives. I’ve overcome my addiction by focusing on other interests and pursuits. RPG’s are no longer a focal point in my life. Don’t get me wrong, every once in awhile I’ll pick up a controller and indulge myself. But only for a little while. The illusion of escape that I once found through and in the role-playing games is no longer there.

Service:

All over service at Tulalip was probably the best I’ve seen in Washington. This really says a lot as they have many areas they “could” potentially fail in but they don’t. The rooms are spotless, the wait staff attentive, and overall service welcoming and friendly. The Muckleshoot Casino fails miserably in this area. Their servers are usually grumpy and seem like they are working for the government more than a casino. The service is slow and the food is mediocre. For as much money as this casino pulls in, it is shocking to me that they don’t consider their customers a bit more. I realize that the majority of the customers are paying with comp dollars, but the tips are not comped and I have a hard time EVER leaving more than 15% for these folks as it’s like pulling teeth to get my drink refilled or food in a timely fashion. I always feel like they’re doing me a favor. It’s the same when my slot machine has an issue. I have to basically “find” a person to help me and they are always slow and irritated when they have to fix the machine. As if I’ve purposely made the machine run out of paper. Snoqualmie does a much better job. Their staff is welcoming, the cocktail waitresses quick to serve and with a smile, and those that handle the machines are kind about assisting me with whatever the issue. It just feels like a classier experience every time I’m there.

Ambiance:

Though the Muckleshoot Casino is still under renovations and making a lot of changes like their Coyaba Grill which is the best dining experience they have to date with gorgeous pendant lights everywhere, but the ambiance still doesn’t feel as rich as the other two. Snoqualmie and Tulalip have managed to really make you feel like you’re in “Little Vegas.” With gorgeous furnishings, perfect lighting, and exciting music you definitely want to stay out and party as long as possible. The Muckleshoot feels very dark and a little cheesy. One thing Muckleshoot does have that the others do not is a complete non-smoking casino. I gravitate toward that casino just so that I don’t have to take a shower immediately after getting home. As a non-smoker, there is nothing worse than sitting down to my favorite slot machine and having a smoker sit down next to me and light up. I immediately have to get up and move and I may have felt the vibe with that particular machine so it’s annoying when that occurs.

Regardless of where you decide to play, eat, and frolic all three of these casinos have something fun to offer. I feel like I win the most at Snoqualmie and then Muckleshoot. Tulalip I haven’t really won much money at but the rest of the experience made it worthwhile and I hope to get over to it again soon for another occasion. My play mostly consists of slots so if I was playing table games my odds might be different but for slot play, I recommend Snoqualmie for bigger payouts more often. Another cool thing with Snoqualmie is the Snoqualmie Falls just a short drive away and the lodge there with great dining and shopping as well.
